Mercedes s-Class V12 engine celebrated its 30th anniversary

The Widlasta, a 12-cylinder powertrain manufactured by Mercedes, has been a unique top-class Mercedes S engine for almost 30 years. All indications are that the next generation of limousine will get a powerful heart and the end of the V12 is still a long way off. The first 12-cylinder 6-liter engine appeared in the Mercedes S-Class 600se/SEL (W140) in 1991. Then the unit generated a power of 408 HP and 580 Nm of maximum torque, which allowed this giant limousine to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.3 seconds. For the transfer of the drive to the rear axle, a 4-speed automatic transmission was responsible, which allowed a maximum speed of 250 km / h.

Then in 1993, the S600 variant was introduced, which had slightly less power at 394 HP and 570 Nm of torque, but was available with both a 4-and 5-speed automatic.
The second release of the V12 engine took place in 1999, when the fourth-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W220) debuted on the market. Then the device landed in the S600 version, and its stroke volume was 5.8 liters. In this case, the engine developed 367 HP and 530 Nm, which in combination with a 5-speed automatic also allowed acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds.

In 2002, a version of the S600 Biturbo was also released, the 12-cylinder petrol unit of which was reduced to 5.5-liter, but due to an additional turbine, its power increased to 500 HP and 800 Nm.
